What, think I'm dreaming?
I'm not. If you don't have a good putting game you're pretty much hosed. Your putting will send your round scores flying like a bloody rocket into outer friggin' space.
It's not so important just to have good mechanics, but the ability to be able to control your speed and alignment. By doing just these two things you can control distance and the ability to control the path your putts take and keeping them online.
So first things first. Start by keeping your elbows in and move your arms like a pendulum back and forth in a straight line. First just using your arms for a few swings, then doing it with a putter in your hand. Focus on keeping an aligned swing back and forth with your elbows in.
Focus!
Keep doing this with a putter and focus on the swing alignment. Next, visualize having a ball in front of you and think about how far you need to take your swing back and to the front to get the proper speed of putt, so you can control your putting distance. See the ball leaving your putter club head and it's trajectory toward the hole and it's break point if need be.
Do this a number of times. I do this when I throw free throws to the basketball net I have a home. Believe me this is similar. I visualize the path the ball will go and the throw I need for it to go in. As well, believe you can do it. Okay, lastly, start using the ball. Keep your elbows in and body still. Keep taking swings like I said and visualize the ball going in. If you need to, take more practice swings without the ball. I think you're ready now. By doing exactly what I said above your putting speed, distance and alignment control will improve drastically by doing this weekly at a practice green which you should do, and on the course during a game
with your buddies or co-workers.
You'll have some good water cooler conversation if you're able to get better with these tips. The rest is up to you. And my little disclaimer here; Results Not Typical. Meaning you have to follow these tips to get any better. If not I hope you have a plan B. I hope I'm able to create value for golfers out there with these dead simple putting tips. Now go Give it on the putting green with your short putts!
