2 Foot Putts And How To Control Putting Speed

Hey everyone, Good old Markie here.

One thing I've always been focused on is doing short putts. They are important and harder to control distance wise. You'd think that short putts of 2 or 3 feet would be easier than long putts. Not so.

Okay, here's what to do. Yep, I've gone over this time and time again and I'll keep on going over it until the end of my time here on the "Grassy Knoll." First things first, you need to do tap in putts from a foot away and do those for 5 minutes. If any go past the hole or not in at all, go back and start over again.

I'm not kidding. Then when you're done with the 1 footers, start doing the 2 footers. Don't worry about major mechanics. Just do these 1 and 2 foot short putts like you're getting up in the morning. It's like clock work and instinctive. If these short putts take you 15 or twenty minutes, just do it. I know I say to do shorter sessions of 10 or 15 minutes at most, but for these short putts, you need to get your control spot on. Like I keep saying, think about guys like Tiger who even miss 2 footers. Especially if it's an important tournament. But with you every putt is important even if you're just by yourself on the course or in a tourney with your co-workers or friends.

What you can do as well is just do the 1 footers for 10 minutes one day, then do 2 footers the next day for 10 minutes and take a day off. This way you get at least 3 10 minute short putting sessions a week. If you need help with the mechanics part just refer back to some of our articles on mechanics or interviews with our experts on mechanics when doing short putts or even tap-ins.

I hope this helps you out when doing 1 or 2 footers. Even Tiger would practice these.

Mark
